The Burmese junta claims it has taken control of one of the most notorious deception facilities on the boundary with Thai territory, as it reclaims important area lost in the ongoing civil war.

KK Park, located south of the boundary community of Myawaddy, has been synonymous with online fraud, financial crime and forced labor for the past five years.

Thousands were enticed to the complex with guarantees of high-income positions, and then forced to run sophisticated schemes, extracting countless millions of currency from victims across the world.

The junta, historically compromised by its links to the deception industry, now claims it has taken the compound as it extends control around Myawaddy, the main commercial connection to Thailand.

Military Advancement and Strategic Aims

In recent weeks, the military has driven back rebels in various regions of Myanmar, aiming to maximise the number of locations where it can hold a scheduled election, starting in December.

It currently doesn't control significant territories of the nation, which has been divided by fighting since a government overthrow in February 2021.

The poll has been rejected as a fake by resistance groups who have vowed to block it in areas they occupy.

Establishment and Growth of KK Park

KK Park started with a rental contract in the first part of 2020 to build an business complex between the ethnic organization (KNU), the ethnic insurgent organization which dominates much of this territory, and a obscure HK stock market corporation, Huanya International.

Investigators think there are links between Huanya and a influential Asian mafia individual Wan Kuok Koi, often referred to as Broken Tooth, who has later funded additional scam hubs on the frontier.

The facility developed swiftly, and is easily observable from the Thailand border of the frontier.

Those who managed to escape from it describe a brutal system enforced on the countless people, many from continental African nations, who were detained there, compelled to operate long hours, with mistreatment and assaults inflicted on those who did not manage to reach targets.

Current Actions and Claims

A statement by the junta's communications department said its forces had "liberated" KK Park, releasing in excess of 2,000 laborers there and taking possession of 30 of Elon Musk's Starlink internet equipment – extensively utilized by scam hubs on the Thai-Myanmar frontier for digital operations.

The statement faulted what it termed the "extremist" KNU and local militia units, which have been opposing the junta since the takeover, for illegally controlling the region.

The regime's declaration to have shut down this notorious fraud facility is very likely aimed at its main patron, China.

Beijing has been pressuring the junta and the Thai government to do more to terminate the criminal businesses operated by Asian organizations on their border.

Earlier this year many of China-based laborers were extracted of deception facilities and flown on special flights back to China, after Thai authorities eliminated supply to electricity and fuel provisions.

Larger Situation and Persistent Activities

But KK Park is merely one of at least 30 comparable compounds located on the border.

The majority of these are under the control of Karen armed units aligned to the regime, and the majority are currently functioning, with numerous individuals operating frauds inside them.

In reality, the assistance of these armed units has been critical in helping the junta repel the KNU and additional rebel factions from territory they seized over the previous 24 months.

The armed forces now controls almost all of the road joining Myawaddy to the rest of Myanmar, a goal the military established before it organizes the initial phase of the election in December.

It has taken Lay Kay Kaw, a recent settlement created for the KNU with Japanese investment in 2015, a period when there had been hopes for permanent peace in Karen State following a countrywide truce.

That represents a more substantial defeat to the KNU than the takeover of KK Park, from which it did get a certain amount of income, but where the majority of the monetary advantages went to military-aligned militias.

A informed source has indicated that fraud operations is ongoing in KK Park, and that it is probable the junta took control of only part of the large-scale facility.

The source also believes Beijing is providing the Myanmar armed forces rosters of Asian people it seeks taken from the deception compounds, and returned back to stand trial in China, which may account for why KK Park was targeted.
