Teenager Discovered Deceased After False Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One teenage boy was discovered deceased just days following being falsely blamed of taking the cremated remains of a deceased infant during a burglary, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his body in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on 19 November 2021.
False Allegations Start
The investigation heard how his parent received a message on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if Kai was her child. The communication added: "Tell him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a statement read to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, asserting her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An investigation report from police later concluded the alleged burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the items was never stolen in the first place".
Media reports about the alleged taken ashes attracted online comments, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".
The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she said.
Emotional Health Impact
She added that Kai had been diagnosed with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".
Kai was detained at home, but nothing was found. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had not reached out to the relatives by the time of his death.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her son told her he had gone into the house because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he wanted, but refuted removing anything.
Digital Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied digitally after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old encouraged Kai to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".
She portrayed him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is completely devastated".
He had been "clearly concealing his concerns", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
School Response
The inquest received testimony from educational staff at the local High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some students talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she rang Kai's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The proceedings heard his family said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Senior investigator told the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what enhancements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he said: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a young child.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the medium of social media.
"On 11 November, he was questioned by the police and following his questioning he was freed while investigations proceeded."
The coroner determined: "Exists no proof that the acts or failures of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his purpose."
